Assignment 3
Choose five characters
Write two sentences telling what you know about him or her. Mr. Rogers- Mr. Rogers is a butler for the house on Indian Island. He was a tall lank man, gray-haired and very respectable. In my opinion, he was a very nice man, and good at his job. I think this because he is very nice to the guests. Mrs. Rogers- Mrs. Rogers is also a butler for the house and is married to Mr. Rogers. She is has a flat monotonous voice. In Vera's opinion, she was a,"White bloodless ghost of a woman. Very respectable looking, with her hair dragged back from her face with her black dress. Queer light eyes that shifted the whole time from place to place." I think she is also good at her job because she cares about the guests. For example, she asks Vera,"I hope you have everything you want, Miss?" This shows that she cares about what Vera wanted. Miss Emily Brent- Miss Emily Brent is 65, and did not approve of lounging. her father was a Colonel of the old school. She came to Indian Island because she got a letter from a person she met on her last summer's holiday. Dr. Armstrong- Dr. Armstrong drove a Morris, and he was very good at his job. He was a very intelligent man who is very curious about things. Vera Claythorne- Vera Claythorne was a former governess who comes to Indian Island to serve as a secretary to Mrs. Owen. She wants to escape her past in which she killed a small boy in her care.
Great job! Perhaps as you read, you will find out more about Dr. Armstrong. Why was he invited to Indian Island? Why are his crimes unforgivable?

chapter 2
december 2, 2009 SUSPENSE...
The first example of suspense is, after Mr. Davis asks if anyone wanted a nip before leaving, he says, "Mustn't delay, then. Our good host and hostess will be expecting us." I think this is an example of suspense because it seems like he is trying to hurry everybody up to get to the island, almost as if something important would happen when they arrive. The next example would be, when Emily Brent said, " That's a very small boat." I think this is also an example of suspense because if the owners of the island would be so rich, why would they have such a small boat? It seems like everything just is not right, and this makes it more interesting. The third example, would be when Fred Narracott thinks, " This was a queer lot. Not at all his idea of what Mrs.Owen's guests were likely to be." This is suspense because it makes the reader want to know what Mrs. Owen is like, or why she is truly having them come. It is suspense because it adds more thing the reader has to think about, and piece together. And lastly, when Philip Lombard said sharply, " Must be difficult to land here in dirty weather." This is suspense in my mind because why would they make it so difficult to get on and off the island? this also makes you think about what the Owens are really trying to do, or if they are trying to trap them there.
These are all examples of suspense, and they all make the novel more interesting, and more fun to read. Ryan-
Good examples of suspense. This certainly adds to the novel and makes the reader want to continue reading to find out what happens next - exactly what a mystery novelist wants to have happen. Be sure and link to the 'AND THEN THERE WERE NONE' page. Not too many students have done this correctly.

chapter 1
how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
I think that a mystery novel differs from a narrative in a few ways. First, I think that a mystery novel contains clues and hints, and the main part of the story is not shown until the end of the book. In a narrative, the story is mostly straight forward, and you are not trying to figure things out. And lastly, I think that most mystery novels leave you wanting to read more because they are cliffhangers. Most narrative books are not like this.
how might the title be a clue to the story?
I think that the title, And Then There Were None__, might mean that someone stole something very important, that people needed. For example, someone stole all the gas or oil in a town. Or, instead of someone steeling something, people may just run out of something very important to them, and the story is about finding a way to get it back.
Ryan-
Good explanation for what makes a mystery; most mystery authors are very good at cliffhangers!
